Exploring Apple Hill

If you have been following our travels this fall you know our household has been spending lots of time in Apple Hill in Northern California. Apple Hill is located between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe just north of Highway 50. The region is full of apple growers, over 50 of them to be exact. Besides apples the region also beckons visitors with seasonal tree farms, juicy summer berries and all types of local produce. What most people don’t realize is that this part of El Dorado County also offers some unique and award-winning wineries. The wineries of Apple Hill are often overlooked and we aren’t sure why.

There is something about being in this part of California that embraces fall like nowhere else. The air is crisp and clean. The leaves change with dramatic displays of fiery reds and buttery yellows. Some years a dusting of snow covers the ground. Views abound from the American River valley below up to the Sierra Nevada Mountain peaks above. Tourists arrive year after year bundled up, even on the warmest of fall days, in festive plaid shirts, knee-high boots and scarves. The whole experience is a scene right out of a magazine celebrating the fall months.

The wineries in Apple Hill are nestled in pictureque valleys with drives that carve through vineyards bathed in the golden light of fall. Just stepping out of the car the crunch of leaves underfoot is suddenly centerting as quiet solitude envelopes. Entering the wineries, the crazy apple buying frenzee of surrounding farms is immediately forgotten and the focus shifts to another piece of California agriculture. Wines have been crafted here since before the Gold Rush and the same enterpreneureal sprirt seems to linger as winemakers use innovative techniques and artfully capture the terroir in the wines they produce.

Follow us in the coming weeks as we introduce you to some of our favorite wineiries in this fall wonderland. The wineries of Apple Hill provide day date perfection and midweek excapes for anyone looking to get away from it all.
