We are already almost to four weeks into summer around here and the lack of routines and schedules is making us all a little jumpy. I have to admit, I don’t love summer. Sleeping in, seeing friends and going exploring is cool for a while and then my tots start marching off the edge with boundless energy and opressive hot summer days.
This week we had a quick getaway to see some friends at Dillon Beach. I definitely want to share some tips with you since this was our second year vacationing there. If you haven’t heard of Dillon Beach, it’s a sleepy beach on the Marin coast where cool summer days becon those of us overheating in the valley.
This weekend we are unpacking and packing again for our next short trip to Sonoma wine country next week. So ready for some lazy days by the river. We are also going to try to get out for some blueberry picking, farmer’s market shopping and getting some house projects finished. Here is what we are obsessing over around here right now
It’s been hot here in California this week and it got so nice yesterday we all took a quick icy dip in our pool for the first swimming day of the season. It didn’t last long, and now there are more storms headed our way. We are going to try to get out in between rain downpours this weekend to pick strawberries! Two of our favorite local organic strawberry farms opened this week and we have been waiting to get some of the juicy local berries for ourselves! I’m so ready to make strawberry jam and syrup. Two of my favorites! We got our outside furniture all set up last weekend so I even got to have breakfast out by the pool this morning. Pictured here. At least I got out while I could! Here is what we are obsessed with this weekend. What are you up to?
Last week was one of those weeks that finishes before it begins. With Spring Break and the holiday weekend we are all ready for a nap! This weekend I want to get ready for pool season and get myself amped up for spring. We are going to finish putting our patio furniture outside and buy some pieces we need to complete our set. We need to stock up for the week at the farmer’s market and do some meal prep for the week to keep us on track. What are you doing this weekend? Here is what we are obsessed with today
We have been trying to soak up the gorgeous weather we have been having this week by getting outside, going for hikes and playing tourist at some local farms. More rain is on the way this weekend so we are going to get out while we can and celebrate the start of little league and get some spring cleaning out of the way before break next week.
Our kitchen renovation continued this week. We had contractors come out to template for our new marble countertops and had our new farmhouse sink installed. We found a new Viking professional oven at a local appliance discounter so now our appliances are going to match. I highly recommend shopping around for the appliances you really want. After shopping for weeks we found our oven for less than the least expensive brands out there.
Today make sure to follow along as we take over the El Dorado Winery Association’s Instagram account. We are going to show you some of our favorite family-friendly wineries and secret places to visit. Wineries can be a family activity with some planning and flexibility. Our trips to wine country usually revolve around a country drive, a visit to a winery to purchase a bottle or two and a picnic outside. Sometimes I taste a wine or two and Ben sticks with non-alcoholic choices with our tots and serves as the driver. I try to visit wineries that I know are going to be kid-friendly with somewhere to eat and spread out and let our tots run around safely.
This week started of with a bang around here. It was our kitchen demo day. The whole kitchen, except for the floors, were taken out in one fell swoop (or 1,000). We have been in our house for a year now and we told ourselves we wouldn’t start any projects until we had been here that long. We are remodeling our kitchen without a contractor and I have taken on the role of general contractor (Mom, wife, blogger and student) for the duration of this project.
Demo took a whole day and the second day our new cabinets started to get installed. We hired professionals for this! Today our countertop fabricators are coming to take measurements and get going on making our new marble countertops. This means no kitchen for another week! I thought not having a kitchen wouldn’t be a big deal. It’s not a huge deal. It is just a real inconvenience especially with two kids and a puppy on the loose.
I’m trying to keep everything going and decorate and get ready for the holidays along with finishing my semester of school (last final tomorrow). Going to the tree farm last weekend was such a fun day and having a gorgeous tree we cut down ourselves sitting in our home definitely is forcing me to remember what is important.
Here is what is getting me inspired this week
If you are considering cutting down a tree and live in Northern CA there are so many farms to chose from. We posted this guide of local farms
This week at Farm Tots was full of exploring and learning about citrus farming in our area. This was the first year we were able to get out of the house and visit some of our local mandarin farms. My tots are obsessed with mandarins and call them orangies because they are a cuter smaller version of oranges. Instead of buying them at our usual store, Costco, I wanted to get outside and find where we could buy them locally.
We are getting ready for a Farm Tots style Thanksgiving and preparing for some upcoming travel. While I am doing laundry and organizing our household here is what I am thinking about and reading and what my weekend inspiration is this week. (more…)
It’s almost the weekend and since we have been housebound for a while we aren’t up to much. Trying to stay in and get organized for some upcoming travel, getting caught up on my studies, get our winter garden planted and our house clean and ready for the holiday season. Here is what we are thinking, reading and and listening to for our weekend inspiration.
How we are going to decorate for our annual Thanksgiving dinner. I got the idea for tree cutting candle holders when a friend was designing her brother’s wedding decor for his 4th of July wedding in Big Fork, MT this summer. Now I am totally obsessed with the idea of using wood chargers for a forest inspired dinner party (more…)
Farm visits can be dirty business. Especially after some much needed California rain. This weekend we visited some local apple farms right after the first thunder and rain of the fall and we were a mucky muddy bunch. I usually make sure our tots go out in rain boots whenever we visit farms or go outside this time of year. Here are the Farm Tot favorite rain boots.
