Farm Tots Weekend.

Pancakes and Strawberries

It’s been hot here in California this week and it got so nice yesterday we all took a quick icy dip in our pool for the first swimming day of the season. It didn’t last long, and now there are more storms headed our way. We are going to try to get out in between rain downpours this weekend to pick strawberries! Two of our favorite local organic strawberry farms opened this week and we have been waiting to get some of the juicy local berries for ourselves! I’m so ready to make strawberry jam and syrup. Two of my favorites! We got our outside furniture all set up last weekend so I even got to have breakfast out by the pool this morning. Pictured here. At least I got out while I could! Here is what we are obsessed with this weekend. What are you up to?

Want to know where to find local strawberries in the Sacramento area? Here is our guide from last year

Last year we were picking strawberries in March, this year the two local farms for picking organic strawberries are just opening this week

Since we are talking about strawberries we definitely are going to try these Strawberry and Vanilla pancakes

Why stop now let’s just say I’m packing some make ahead lunches with this Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Almonds and Goat Cheese

We are trying to figure out how to escape some of our obligations on the weekends to attend some food festivals and family friendly events this month too

Gap Kids

Last week was one of those weeks that finishes before it begins. With Spring Break and the holiday weekend we are all ready for a nap! This weekend I want to get ready for pool season and get myself amped up for spring. We are going to finish putting our patio furniture outside and buy some pieces we need to complete our set. We need to stock up for the week at the farmer’s market and do some meal prep for the week to keep us on track. What are you doing this weekend? Here is what we are obsessed with today

Completing our outdoor furniture set and making the outside just as comfortable as inside

We love cheese and some weekend nights we just slice some homemade bread and serve dip for our entree in front of a movie so I’m definitely trying this easy recipe for Goat Cheese and Basil Dip

Getting these stools to finish off our kitchen remodel and give our tots somewhere to have breakfast

Putting all the pictures from our recent trip to Daffodil Hill in a photo book to give to one of my oldest mom friends

Daffodil Hill

We have been trying to soak up the gorgeous weather we have been having this week by getting outside, going for hikes and playing tourist at some local farms. More rain is on the way this weekend so we are going to get out while we can and celebrate the start of little league and get some spring cleaning out of the way before break next week.

Here is what we are obsessing over this weekend.

How to get outside and where to go

Making this Sesame Soba and Ribboned Omelet Salad this weekend for lunches next week

Sneaking off to my favorite bakery for hot cross buns and coffee

Making these for National Oatmeal Cookie Day tomorrow

What to do with all the local asparagus I bought this morning

What are you up to this weekend?  Any farm finds or recipes you think we should try?  Leave us a comment and tell us what you think of Farm Tots!  We love hearing from our friends.

Farm Tots Weekend.

El Nino has definitely come to visit our part of California this month. After a balmy February we have been getting daily drenchings of much needed rain. Our weekend plans got cancelled because of the incoming storm so we are getting some inside projects done instead like getting our spring plants for our garden and starting some summer seeds in our kitchen window.

For anyone that was planning on attending the Farm Fresh to you Capay Farm Tour this weekend like we were. It is cancelled. Another event is scheduled for next month.

Here are some other recipes we are trying and ideas we are obsessing over this weekend

We have a bowl full of mandarins that I want to turn into this Cranberry Mandarin Bread for warm gooey fireside snacks

These clogs that I made fun of my friend in Montana for last summer and now realize how they might just be the best transitional spring shoe out there and they are on sale

Trying to dodge the rain for a while to get to one of the farmstands that are open this month to get our weekly groceries

Getting ready for our Spring Break trip to San Francisco and finding all the activities for the crew of kids we are traveling with

Obsessing over where and how we can find ourselves a vacation cabin worthy of Cabin Porn

Picture is from our trip to Skinner Vineyards & Winery last month. Their wood burning fireplace outside is the best place to sip wine and visit with friends. Look for our review of tot-friendly winery trips later this month.

Farm Tots Weekend. December Week 3 Edition.

Our kitchen renovation continued this week. We had contractors come out to template for our new marble countertops and had our new farmhouse sink installed. We found a new Viking professional oven at a local appliance discounter so now our appliances are going to match. I highly recommend shopping around for the appliances you really want. After shopping for weeks we found our oven for less than the least expensive brands out there.

Today make sure to follow along as we take over the El Dorado Winery Association’s Instagram account. We are going to show you some of our favorite family-friendly wineries and secret places to visit. Wineries can be a family activity with some planning and flexibility. Our trips to wine country usually revolve around a country drive, a visit to a winery to purchase a bottle or two and a picnic outside. Sometimes I taste a wine or two and Ben sticks with non-alcoholic choices with our tots and serves as the driver. I try to visit wineries that I know are going to be kid-friendly with somewhere to eat and spread out and let our tots run around safely.

Here is what we are reading this week

The El Dorado Winery Association website has brochures and a map of the wine tasting region to plan a family-friendly wine country trip or a relaxing adults only day trip

Farm Tots Weekend. December Week 2 Edition.

This week started of with a bang around here. It was our kitchen demo day. The whole kitchen, except for the floors, were taken out in one fell swoop (or 1,000). We have been in our house for a year now and we told ourselves we wouldn’t start any projects until we had been here that long. We are remodeling our kitchen without a contractor and I have taken on the role of general contractor (Mom, wife, blogger and student) for the duration of this project.

Demo took a whole day and the second day our new cabinets started to get installed. We hired professionals for this! Today our countertop fabricators are coming to take measurements and get going on making our new marble countertops. This means no kitchen for another week! I thought not having a kitchen wouldn’t be a big deal. It’s not a huge deal. It is just a real inconvenience especially with two kids and a puppy on the loose.

I’m trying to keep everything going and decorate and get ready for the holidays along with finishing my semester of school (last final tomorrow). Going to the tree farm last weekend was such a fun day and having a gorgeous tree we cut down ourselves sitting in our home definitely is forcing me to remember what is important.

Here is what is getting me inspired this week

If you are considering cutting down a tree and live in Northern CA there are so many farms to chose from. We posted this guide of local farms

Using materials found right outside to make a gorgeous holiday centerpiece

A while back we shared our homemade beet hummus recipe on Instagram, now we want to try a new recipe from a local blogger we love

Learning how to make dinners in the rice maker while we don’t have a kitchen including a recipe for rice maker mac and cheese

I am obsessed with making our own bread.  I tell friends constantly to get a bread machine.  Here is one for a reasonable price that would be a perfect gift

Farm Tots Weekend.

Struble Ranch Mandarin Farm Visit Placer County CaliforniaThis week at Farm Tots was full of exploring and learning about citrus farming in our area. This was the first year we were able to get out of the house and visit some of our local mandarin farms. My tots are obsessed with mandarins and call them orangies because they are a cuter smaller version of oranges. Instead of buying them at our usual store, Costco, I wanted to get outside and find where we could buy them locally.

We are getting ready for a Farm Tots style Thanksgiving and preparing for some upcoming travel. While I am doing laundry and organizing our household here is what I am thinking about and reading and what my weekend inspiration is this week. (more…)

Farm Tots Weekend.

It’s almost the weekend and since we have been housebound for a while we aren’t up to much. Trying to stay in and get organized for some upcoming travel, getting caught up on my studies, get our winter garden planted and our house clean and ready for the holiday season. Here is what we are thinking, reading and and listening to for our weekend inspiration.

How we are going to decorate for our annual Thanksgiving dinner. I got the idea for tree cutting candle holders when a friend was designing her brother’s wedding decor for his 4th of July wedding in Big Fork, MT this summer. Now I am totally obsessed with the idea of using wood chargers for a forest inspired dinner party (more…)
